Training objectives

This Laboratory is the fourth technological teaching of the degree course and examines the basic elements of the final design from the technological point of view, structural, economic and relationship with the environmental system.

Objective of the Laboratory is to guide the students along a path of analysis and study of the tools with which the architect manages and controls at all stages of the construction process, the continuity and consistency between the architectural and technical solutions that determining the feasibility of the architectural project.

The themes developed in the laboratory relate to the methods of analysis, the control tools, the techniques and operational procedures that allow to move from a project designed in a building built.

knowledge:
- The design process management at every stage, from design to operation and maintenance phases
- graphical representation mode of an executive project
- technical content of construction detail in scale 1: 5
- steel building systems, nodes and interfaces with other building systems
- principles of structural design and setting of a basic structural system
- principles of design of technical plants and fire regulations

skill:
- functional definition of the building and analysis of the end user needs
- consistency between architectural choices, construction technologies, technical plants and structural aspects
- preliminary design, final design and executive design
- management of the construction detail in scale 1: 5
- principles related to sustainable architecture and energy efficiency

Prerequisites

Can take this exam those who have already taken the exam of
- Laboratory of building architecture I or other basic technological course

It is required the basic knowledge of the topics:
- Materials and design of construction elements
- Technical Physics
- Environmental design
- Structural design

In particular:
- Knowledge of materials, components and systems available on the building market ;
- Basic knowledge of the principles of the Technical Physics and installations ;
- Basic knowledge of the structural aspects of a building;
- Ability to assemble products and systems according to the required performance by the Building System with particular attention to environmental aspects.

Course programme

This Laboratory is an interdisciplinary course that provides 132 hours of teaching (lessons and class exercises), about Executive Design (84 hours), Structures Design (24 hours) and Technical Plants (24 hours). These three teachings jointly contribute to the Laboratory teaching program.

Feature of the Laboratory is the belief of the architect's role as a coordinator of skills and disciplines characterizing the building process: from preliminary concepts till the realization of the work. The Laboratory organizes visits aimed to the direct knowledge of particularly interesting works of architecture.

The content of Executive Design will be:
- theoretical principles and methodologies to learn, understand and control the aspects of formation, transformation, recovery, maintenance and management of building systems;
- analysis and evaluation of end user needs;
- concepts of environmental and economic sustainability;
- theoretical principles and methodologies to learn, understand and control the production processes of construction industry in order to improve the performance quality of the products;
- manufacturing processes and related technologies for the design of building structures;
- Rules and standards for proper building practice.

Contributions of the teaching "Structures Design" and "Technical Plants" modules highlights some of the many roles and expertise of the architectural profession and aims to provide students with a first idea of the constraints and complexities of the construction process.

The module of "Structures Design" focuses on the correct sizing of the structural elements, but mainly on the aesthetic management of these inevitable elements.

The module of Technical Plants aims to synthesize the specific skills acquired in the past years in technical physics courses integrating these knowledge in the global vision of the project.

The design will cover the design (preliminary, final and executive ) of a building given by the teachers and identified between the real needs of a local public administration, with a focus on rules, structural setting and detailed design including technical installations.

The work will be developed in two phases:
- Development of the preliminary design and final design of the assigned building;
- Development of the detailed design including the report describing the architectural design, the construction details of the most significant nodes (scale 1: 5), the structural scheme of the project with its elements and nodes.
The planning exercise can be done individually or in pairs.

Didactic methods

The Laboratory consists of 132 hours of teaching:
- 84 hours Detailed design (7 credits)
- 24 hours Structures Design (2 credits)
- 24 hours Technical Plants (2 credits)

About 32 hours will be devoted to lectures on the topics of the three modules and the remaining 89 hours to laboratory activities, aimed to developing classroom exercise under the supervision of teachers.

For each student is provided a "sheet of exercises" in which will be noted the progress of individual projects.

The Laboratory takes place in the second half of the year with two weekly meetings:

- Tuesday (14:00 to 18:00) communications, lectures and meetings with building companies;

- Wednesday (from 09:00 to 17:00) classroom exercise with the teachers.

Learning assessment procedures

Achieving the educational goals will be verified, on examination, through the analysis and discussion of the project developed by the student. The exam will be written and oral. The written part is relates to the building design with the contents listed below, to demonstrate the student's ability to represent their project in its technical contents.

Together with the project, the exam will analyze the path followed by the student to achieve the learning outcomes.
The oral part will deal with the discussion of the project and knowledge of the contents. The final assessment will take into account of:
- Graphic quality of design solutions
- Conformity of the project to the end user needs
- Correctness and consistency of design solutions
- Knowledge of all the technical elements
- Adequacy of structural solutions
- Adequacy of technical installations
- Ability to present the project in a logical manner as the result of consequential choices
