The topic has been deepened following the actions and reflections of foundation fathers of the urban sciences and the study of principal experiences of urban planning concerning concrete cases and paradigmatic cities. The last part of the module is dedicated to the study of technical and law aspects of urban planning practice with a comparison between the Italian and European tradition.

The last lessons have been dedicated to the analysis of cartographical aspects of the urban representation.
3. The two didatical modules have a practical exercise to be carried out by the students organized in groups of work. Didactic methods
- The course is organised on two integrated sections: the first, based on ex cathedra lessons and seminar lessons; the second, based on written exercises.
Lectures and discussions will be supplemented by videos, field studies, visit by guest speakers.
Theory of Urban Planning and Design and Urban Geography modules will be organised around four main issues:
1. Crucial changes in cities, suburbs, and metropolitan areas (in a historical perspective);
2. crucial changes in contemporary city in the perspective of the new relationships between spatial organisation and socio-economic dynamics;
3. significant changes in the traditional European landscapes and territorial organization, based on the city-country nexus, and emergence of a pattern mix;
4. analysis of some typical European urban patterns;
5. policies and practices in the perspective of the re-composition of contemporary cities and territories.
Theory of Urban Planning module focuses on the socio-historical meaning, rationality, and limits of urban planning starting from the end of XIX century. The study of the disciplinary evolution runs alongside the legacy of the outstanding characters of the urban planning theory and their several experiments and practical experiences. They are considered important to build the theoretical status of modern, and contemporary urban planning.
Urban Geography module presents the leading disciplinary issues throughout the study of city and regional contexts, and the implementation of territorialisation phenomena starting from the second part of XX century. Learning assessment procedures
- Work for grading will include assigned readings, two short written exercises, and a longer final paper which will be discussed during the final oral examination.
Approximately 10% of exam grade will be based on class participation, 30% on quality of the two short exercises, 30% on quality of the final paper, 30% on presentation of final paper and discussion about assigned readings.
