Alessandro (Lou Castel), suffering from epilepsy and a paranoid disorder, decides to remove from his only healthy brother the weight of his defective family and begins a series of dramatic murders. An extremist and desecrating act which draws to him international attention. The dissolution of this middle class family is carried out with a mixture of unpleasant ferociousness and poetry, which finds in the grotesque its best insights, and in the shocking Castel his ideal interpreter. At the dawn of the 1968 protests, Bellocchio, a director from Piacenza, interprets the malaise of a whole generation from his perspective as a young provincial man in his first film. The seed of evil nests itself in the family, an institution heavily placed under discussion. The reciprocal roles, favoured by the patriarchal middle class, represent in a distinctive way the Italy of those years, even if some sections seem resistant to paradigmatic changes in the society and culture, especially if we think about some recent facts reported in the media. -- Piero Verani
