Training objectives

The aim of this course is to provide the students with the necessary knowledge of the main theories of economic development illustrating their recent evolutions and particularly focusing on the emerging economies’ growth processes and development dynamics.
In this framework, the course addresses the following general topics:
-Theory of economic development: growth,convergence, structural change;
-Defining and measuring development: poverty, inequality, human development;
-Debate on the role of government and markets in the dynamics of economic development;
-Growth patterns of the emerging economies and their effects on the rest of the world.

The course is directed towards the acquisition of the following skills, i. e. capability of applying the knowledge assimilated:
-Critically assessing, in a historical and comparative perspective, the growth and development experiences of different countries with a particular focus on the emerging economies;
-Applying the theories and the methodologies studied to specific case-studies;
-Critically handling and analyzing the qualified sources of information and the scientific debate

Course programme

The module consists of 72 didactic hours and it is organized into three different types of activity:
(a)Frontal lecture, (b)interactive laboratories, (c)seminars devoted to specific issues.

(a) Frontal lectures, topics (26 hours):

Introductory basic concepts: economic and human development; growth, development economics;

Poverty and inequality: measurement and policies;

The role of the state in the economic development: Market, Government and Development;

Economic Growth theories and models: basic and augmented Solow Model - Long-run determinants of growth - Lewis model - Theories of Structural Change.

Emerging Economies: definition, historical background, development strategies, market opportunities.

(b) Laboratories (26 hours):

Study, team presentations and discussions of a selected number of academic papers which will be allocated to students in the course of the lecture.

c) Seminars (20 hours)

Didactic methods

The course includes frontal lectures, interactive laboratories consisting of presentations and discussion in teams.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is aimed at evaluating the students' critical judgement and analytical skills.

FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS evaluation meets the following criteria:
- 50% written exam at the end of the module;
- 50% presentation and discussion during the laboratories, level of participation and interaction in the class.


FOR NOT ATTENDING STUDENTS, learning it is assessed directly on the basis of a final written exam.

Reference texts

ATTENDING STUDENTS:
will use the material provided by the lecturer in class: academic papers and book articles.

NOT ATTENDING STUDENTS:
will be required to take a written exam in the official exam session on the basis of a reading list provided at the beginning of the course.
