Training objectives
- The course aims to provide an overall picture of the main theories on economic development, giving particular attention to the strategy for promoting industrial development and to the policies for supporting structural change in developing and emerging contexts.
In particular the course addresses the following general topics:
- The concepts of economic development;
- Analysis of the main industrial development strategies in historical and comparative perspective;
- Analysis of the debate on the role of markets and governments in industrial development dynamics.
- Analysis of the experiences of industrial development of the first comers and late comers;
- The role of international institutions in industrial development dynamics.
The course also intends to favour the acquisition of the following skills:
- Assess critically, in a historical and comparative perspective, the experiences of growth and development in industrialized and emerging countries;
- Assess critically specific case studies through the analysis of relevant quantitative and qualitative literature. Prerequisites
- None.
Course programme
- The course is developed on 72 hours trough three types of activities:
(a) lectures, (b) laboratories (c) seminars.
(a) Lectures, topics (30 hours)
Basic concepts: Economic development and human development - Industrialization - Industrial Development Policies - Growth, poverty and inequality.
The role of the state in industrial development: Market failures – Assessment of policy performances and policy evaluation ex ante and ex post – Government failures and possible remedies - horizontal and selective policies.
Strategies for industrial development: Import substitution - Export Promotion - Special Economic Zone - Liberalization and Protectionism
Late comers and first comers: Europe and the US - Asian economies - Latin America
(b) Laboratories (30 hours)
Study, presentation and discussion of a select number of scientific papers that will be distributed to the student working groups. Support to the elaboration of a final essay and its presentation / discussion in the classroom.
c) Seminars (12 hours) Didactic methods
- The course includes theoretical lectures, interactive laboratory with students’ presentations and discussion
Learning assessment procedures
- FOR ATTENDING STUDENTS, evaluation meets the following criteria:
- 50% written exam;
- 50% presentation and discussion during the laboratories
FOR NOT ATTENDING STUDENTS, learning it is assessed directly on the basis of a final written exam.
