Training objectives

The aim of the course is the study of differential calculus in euclidean spaces in order to solve economic problems of optimization, with a special emphasis on various applications.

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
- carry out optimization of several variables functions;
- analyze and solve real problems within theoretical frameworks such as Linear Programming or Data Envelopment Analysis.

Prerequisites

Basic notions related to the following topics are required:
-differential calculus for one-variable mappings;
-linear algebra.

Course programme

First part (8 hours): Matrix theory, determinants, classification of symmetric matrices.

Second part (22 hours): Euclidean spaces. Unconstrained optimization of several variables functions.

Third part (24 hours): Constrained optimization of several variables functions.

Fourth part (10 hours): Linear Programming and Data Envelopment Analysis.

Didactic methods

Theoretical lectures and tutorials.

Learning assessment procedures

Written examination.

The written exam consists of two or more open-ended questions aimed at verification of all the course contents.

The final grade is given by the sum of the scores assigned to the single questions.
The exam will be passed if and only if the minimum grade is 18.
