Training objectives
- The objective of the course is to provide students with the necessary instruments to understand how and why economic policies are decided and implemented in the European multilevel governance system. In particular, the course focuses attention on the economic policies that have an impact on businesses and productive sectors, so that students can develop knowledge and competences on both the European competitive context and the opportunities offered by European economic policies, which they will be able to use and exploit after graduation, when working for private or public organisations.
Prerequisites
- Bachelor-level Economic courses.
Course programme
- 1. Brief history of the European Union; from trade union to monetary union; the path to the Monetary Union; economic crisis and European budget; Brexit; Covid and national Recovery and Resilience Plans (14 hrs, both lectures and seminars)
2. EU industrial policies: definition and history; the single market; competition policy; technological, SME and environmental policies (14 hrs, both lectures and seminars)
3. European regional policies (Cohesion policies); regional development policies and application for European funds (14 hrs, both lectures and seminars)
4. The big societal challenges and European policies: Covid crisis; Industry 4.0; the economy of digital platforms; the ecological transition (14 hrs, both lectures and seminars)
Note: seminars should be intended as presentations by external experts, tutorials, discussions in class and presentations by students. Didactic methods
- Lectures open to discussion; team work and possibly oral presentations.
Learning assessment procedures
- Knowledge of the issues presented and discussed during the course will be evaluated on the basis of both written exam (50%) and oral presentations (50%).
In case of distance teaching (depending on the evolution of the Covid pandemic) the exam will be oral. Reference texts
- References will be indicated at the beginning of the course; notes on all lectures will be provided in the form of Powerpoint presentations.
