Training objectives
- To get insight into the mechanisms that translate molecular lesion into cellular dysfunction, and thus into physiopathological changes responsible for the clinical phenotype. To acquire the fundamental knowledge for the development of new drugs targeting the pathogenetic route of mono- and multi-factorial diseases.
Prerequisites
- It is necessary to have acquired and assimilated the following knowledge:
• basic aspects of General Biology;
• basic aspects of human anatomy;
• basic aspects of Biochemistry;
• basic aspects of Microbiology;.
• basic aspects of Phisiology. Course programme
- -Aethiology of common diseases (genetic and environmental causes). (6 hours)
-Environmental pathology: Mechanism of action and therapeutic use of bacterial toxins and radiation damage. Deficits of oligoelements and vitamins. (10 hours)
-Acute and chronic inflammation: mediators (histamine, NO, lipid mediators, cytokines, peptides) and their signalling routes. Leukocyte extravasation. (14 hours)
-Cellular pathology: Cell degeneration and death. Necrosis and apoptosis. (6 hours)
-Physiopathology of cardiac and endocrine system. (6 hours)
-The control of cell growth and neoplastic transformation. Oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. (6 hours) Didactic methods
- Formal teaching consists of frontal lectures on all the course’s topics proposed and direct comparison with students through dialogue and questions to realize the level of understanding of the various topics covered.
Learning assessment procedures
- The aim of the exam is to verify at which level the learning objectives have been acquired. The examination consist in written test, a multiple choice questions quiz based on all the topics tackled in the class. The test has the aim of evaluating how deeply the student has studied the subject and how he is able to understand the basic topics analyzed. The time allowed for this test is 16 minutes. It is not allowed consulting any textbook or using electronic devices (PC, smart phone, calculator, ecc). The final mark is the sum of the correct answers in the quiz, to pass the exam it is necessary to get at least 18 point.
