Training objectives

This course aims to train students, through a multidisciplinary approach, on the general basis of vaccinology, discussing topics related to their development and production, the impact of vaccinations on the prevention of infectious diseases, the social and economic implications of vaccinations, the responsibility of health personnel, and the importance of communication. In addition, the course provides the students with information on European, national and regional vaccination strategies, on the side effects and safety of vaccines and on surveillance. Finally, the course provides the student with the opportunity to analyze scientific articles and the legislation related to vaccines.

Prerequisites

To better understand the contents of the course, students should have basic knowledge of microbiology and clinical microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology and immunology.

Course programme

The protective immune responses. Vaccines and disease prevention. Vaccine development; preclinical research and clinical trial phases. National and international legislation. The role of public hygiene. Heterologous effects of vaccination. Types of vaccines and routes of administration. The production of vaccines. Adjuvants. Delivery systems. The formulation and routes of administration. Pediatric vaccines. Vaccines in adults. Vaccines in the elderly. Vaccines and pregnancy. Vaccines in subjects with immune problems. Physio-pathological conditions of interference with vaccination. Examples of experimental vaccines. Unmet needs in vaccinology. Pharmaco-economics and vaccination practices. Vaccine-surveillance. Communication in the vaccination field.

Videorecorded lessons, with speeches by different specialists;
