- Understanding of the main causes and mechanisms of disease, and the protective and/or pathogenetic role of the defense mechanisms of the organism (immune system, inflammation)

- 1) DISEASE AS RESULT OF HOMEOSTASIS DISTURBANCE
Definition of health and disease. Etiology and pathogenesis
2) GENETIC DISORDERS
The most common genetic disorders (hereditary anemias, cystic fibrosis)

3) ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS IN DISEASE
a) PHYSICAL INJURY
b) CHEMICAL INJURY
c) OBESITY AND DIET DEFICIENCIES
d) BACTERIAL TOXINS
4) CELLULAR INJURY
Mechanisms of injury at the cellular level, and patterns of tissue injury: reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hypoxia. Different types of cell death: apoptosis, authophagy and necrosis
5) IMMUNOPATHOLOGY
a) The immune system: B and T lymphocytes, primary and secondary immune responses, antibodies and cell-mediated responses, complement. Immunologic mechanisms of injury, with patterns of injury and major autoimmune diseases.
b) Inflammation: acute and chronic inflammation.
6) NEOPLASIA
Neoplastic disease, with illustrations of benign and malignant processes and their pathologic consequences. Epidemiology, microscopic and macroscopic properties, molecular basis, oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes, neoplasia as multistage process.
