Training objectives
- To supply the students with basic notions regarding building thermal physics, hvac and other systems, the close relation between the building and the environment, introducing them to the design of building systems while respecting the technical norm and the enforced legislation.
Prerequisites
- Basic notions on the thermal and hygrometric behaviour of buildings
Course programme
- - Fundamentals of comfort and health requirements of the building users, energy consumption, properties of air, insulation materials, heat loss and gain calculations, calculation of the winter thermal load.
- Heating systems.
Terminal units. Fluid distribution networks. Central power systems, boilers and other components. Outlines and operation of various systems. Design and dimensioning of radiator systems and circuits. Technical norm and enforced legislation.
- Air Conditioning Systems
Ventilation, cooling and air conditioning. Determination of indoor temperature in summer without air conditioning systems. Determination of summer cooling requirements. Basic refrigeration cycle theory. Psychrometric chart procedures to track thermal and steam transfer.
Technological installations: cooling systems and towers, central units for air treatment, air furnaces, humidifiers, air filtration systems, and set-back thermostats. Integrated HVAC-services and alternative ways of heating and energy supply in buildings (heat pumps, solar energy, heat plus power systems, photo-voltaics). Main system typology. Technical norms and enforced legislation.
