Training objectives

The course to be held during the academic year 20/21 will be replaced in the following years by the course of Laboratory of Computational Mechanics.

Prerequisites

The student should master the main concepts of structural mechanics. It is suggested to attend the course of "Mechanics of Structures".

Course programme

Basics of the finite elements method
Non-linear constitutive laws fo concrete, metals, masonry and wood
Plasticity
Damage mechanics
Fracture mechanics
Failure criteria
Arc length algorthms
Limit analysis of frames and masonry
Non-Eulerian stability
Coupling of material and geometric nonlinearity

Didactic methods

The course is subdivided into two halves, theoretical and practical. The student will practice with both commercial and home made FE codes. The purpose is mainly to improve the operational skills of the students.

Learning assessment procedures

The student has to discuss in a convincing manner a script text presenting the results of an exercise solved on his/her own.
