Training objectives
- The course deals with the study of important building materials, such as concrete, natural stones and wood. In particular, basic information is given concerning the mechanical properties, the degradation processes and the repairing and consolidation methods of these materials.
Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge in the field of Chemistry and Materials Science
Course programme
- Hydraulic binders. Cement designation according to European standards. Portland cement: raw materials and production, setting and hardening reactions. Air-hardening binders: gypsum and lime.
Concrete: aggregates, granulometric distributions, additives. Characteristics of plastic concrete: workability, bleeding, segregation. Characteristics of hardened concrete: porosity, mechanical properties, environmental exposure classes, mix design. Special concretes.
Natural stones as building materials.
Degradation processes in concrete and natural stones: chemical reactions with aggressive and polluting environmental agents, physical degradation processes, biological and microbiological degradation processes. Protection and restoration methods. Products for concrete and stone repair and consolidation.
Wood. The structure of wood. Mechanical properties of clear wood specimens, influence of relative humidity, temperature, loading mode and time. Mechanical properties and classification of structural wood beams. Wood degradation: biological and physical factors. Didactic methods
