Training objectives
- The main objective of the course is to provide skills regarding the design with polymeric materials, transformation technologies and the main classes of polymers.

- Polymeric Materials course
Course programme
- Advantages and disadvantages of plastics. Solid state properties of plastics. Components obtained by injection molding: uniform, thin thicknesses. Failure. Reinforcement with ribs. Assembly methods. Welding: hot tool, spin welding, ultrasonic, vibrational, with lost conductors. Elastic joints. Transformation technologies: extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming, rotational molding, filming, 3D printing. Estimation of cooling time in the mold for injection molded components. Estimation of shrinkages, cooling cycle. Additives. Main plastic materials: polyolefins, styrenics, polyvinyl chloride. Polyamides, polyesters, polyacetal, polycarbonate, acrylics. High performance polymers. Elastomers and foams, polyurethanes. Tutorial on the use of software for the simulation of injection molding (Moldflow).
Didactic methods
- Lectures, laboratory lessons and company visit. Use of Moldflow software for injection molding simulation.
Learning assessment procedures
- Oral exam and discussion of the design project of a plastic part chosen by the student
