Training objectives
- The course aims to provide the knowledge on architecture and operation of turbomachinery (pumps, fans, compressors and turbines) and positive-displacement machines (pumps and compressors). The knowledge is finalized at providing the skills for the rational selection and the management of fluid machines used in industrial processes.
Prerequisites
- For taking the exam, the examinations of the courses of “Analisi matematica”, “Geometria e algebra”, “Fisica generale I” and “Disegno tecnico industriale” must have already been passed. In addition, it is also necessary to have acquired and assimilated the knowledge provided by the course of “Fisica Tecnica”.
Course programme
- The course is organized in 60 hours of both classroom lectures and tutorials, plus 2 hours of laboratory of the integrated course “Macchine + Tecniche di Misura”, carried out in groups. The main topics discussed during classroom lectures are:
1) Fluid motion equations (5 hours).
2) Centrifugal and axial-flow pumps (15 hours).
3) Fans (3 hours).
4) Positive-displacement pumps (2 hours).
5) Hydraulic turbines (Pelton, Francis and Kaplan turbines) (8 hours).
6) Fundamentals of compressible flows (7 hours).
7) Steam and gas turbines (axial-flow turbine stage, multistage axial-flow turbine) (6 hours).
8) Compressors (axial and radial flow compressor stage, multistage compressor) (9 hours).
9) Positive-displacement reciprocating and rotary compressors (5 hours). Didactic methods
- The course is organized as follow:
• classroom lectures and tutorials on the course topics (60 hours);
• laboratory experience carried out in groups (2 hours for each group) of the integrated course “Macchine + Tecniche di Misura”; in laboratory, some of the machines and devices discussed during the course will be shown and measurements will be performed for performance determination.
ssroom lessons. Learning assessment procedures
- The examination aims to check the level of achievement of training goals.
The exam of the integrated course "Macchine + Tecniche di Misura" usually consists in a written test of four questions on the topics discussed in the course "Macchine" and "Tecniche di Misura" (a numerical exercise and a theoretical question for each of the two parts of the integrated course).
For passing the exam the candidate must prove to have the basic knowledge on all the subjects of the course; the gradation of the positive score from 18 to 30 depends on the deepening and rigor that the candidate proves on the knowledge of the topics discussed in the course. Reference texts
