Training objectives
- to have undergraduate knowledge of organic chemistry through the study of functional groups; to be able to apply the basic notions to molecules or a polymeric structure that have an important role as materials.
Prerequisites
- basic notions of the general and inorganic chemistry
Course programme
- The course is divided into two modules. The first module (Organic Chemistry of the functional groups) lays the bases of the knowledge of the relationship among molecular structure and their chemical and fisical properties. The organic chemistry is studied using simple models as the functional groups whose characteristics and properties determine the behaviour of the various classes of compounds (alkanes, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, alkenes, alkynes, aromatic compounds, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, amines and heterocyclic compounds). A short account are given about the organic reactions (substitutions, eliminations and additions) through the thermodynamic, kinetic and mechanistic point of view. The second module (natural and synthetic polymer) utilizes the learned bases to understand the structure and the properties of the natural and synthetic polymers.
Didactic methods
- Theoretical/practical lessons.
Learning assessment procedures
- Written/oral examination.
