Training objectives
Prerequisites
Course programme
- Composite materials: definition. Classification. Semi-finished products. Advantages and disadvantages of composite materials
Fibers and matrices: carbon, glass and aramid fibers. Epoxy and polyester polymeric matrices. Metallic matrices. Ceramic matrices
Composites as anisotropic materials: mechanical properties. Elastic modules, cutting modules and Poisson's coefficients. Mechanical resistance.
Unidirectional sheet micromechanics. Rule of mixtures in series and parallel for the determination of the modules. Estimation of tensile strength in longitudinal and transverse direction.
Failure phenomena
Composite technology. Manual impregnation, layering of prepregs and autoclave care, compression molding, pultrusion, winding, resin transfer molding (RTM).
Polymeric materials: Advantages and disadvantages of plastics. Definition. Structure. Classifications: thermoplastic and thermosetting, amorphous and semicrystalline. Main polymers and special polymers. Additives and compounding. Thermoplastic polymer transformation technologies: extrusion, injection molding. Design for manufacturing. Jointing and assembly elements. Moldflow (Simulation software for injection molding)
Exercises:
Design of a product using a composite material of those described in the course
Design of an object in polymeric material and simulation of its injection molding with Moldflow software
Teaching methods
Classroom lessons. The topics of the course are presented through a power point presentation. The theoretical parts of the course are always followed by applications to a specific case. Didactic methods
Learning assessment procedures
- The exam is aimed at verifying the level of achievement of the training objectives of the course. In particular, the exam consists of:
1. A questionnaire containing multiple choice questions on the course topics
2. Brief interview by the student about projects based on classroom exercises
Overcoming phase 1. is essential to proceed to phases 2 of the test.
The exam is passed if both phases are considered positive Reference texts
