Th course has the following main goal: give the main ideas behind basic choice of materials and manufacturing technologies

Modulo: 67879 - PROGETTAZIONE INTEGRATA DI PRODOTTO E DI PROCESSO

The course aims to provide the basic knowledge and skills on the theory of structural calculation and on the behavior of materials subject to stress, also with the use of a numerical code. The main knowledge concerns: the theory of the mechanical behavior of materials for design purposes, the static analysis of systems/objects following appropriate simplifications, basic concepts concerning the fatigue behavior of the material and the concentration of stresses. The most important skills developed during the course concern: developing a design process by setting an adequate workflow, understanding the key aspects that can influence the behavior of the material subject to external stresses and knowing how to identify possible issues due to an inadequate design choice. Composite materials: definition. Classification. Semi-finished products. Advantages and disadvantages of composite materials. Fibers and matrices: carbon, glass and aramid fibers. Epoxy and polyester polymeric matrices. Metallic matrices. Ceramic matrices. Composites as anisotropic materials: mechanical properties. Elastic modules, shear modules and Poisson's ratio. Mechanical resistance. Micromechanics. Rule of the mixture in series and parallel for the determination of the modules. Estimation of tensile strength in longitudinal and transverse direction. Failure phenomena Composite technology. Manual impregnation, layering of prepregs and autoclave curing, compression molding, pultrusion, winding, resin transfer molding (RTM). Design of a product using a composite material of those described in the course

In the module of Integrated Product and Process Design the following topics will be addressed: references to the theory of the beam and the stresses to which the material is subject, analysis of working structures in the elastoplastic field, references to the theory of elasticity, mechanical characteristics of the materials used for the realization of artifacts and on laboratory tests for their characterization, the phenomenon of fatigue failure, internal and external factors that influence the life of an object, the carving effect and the ideal stress, notes on the finite elements method and use of detailed calculation models.
