Training objectives

The module aims to introduce students to the study of a specific topic of medieval archaeology. The theme of the course " Medieval architecture of urban areas ( X - XV century) " provides a overview of the topic and the presentation of interesting cases studies; at the same time a practical part on some Trent monuments which allow students to experience and personally apply the knowledge acquired .

Prerequisites

General knowledge of history and medieval culture , particularly for those students who do not come from a curriculum of humanistic studies

Course programme

The course provides a first overview of the transformation of the classical city during the early middle age under various points of view (topographical development, functional areas, emergence of new poles of aggregation, introduction of new building techniques , the role of the secular and ecclesiastical urban aristocracies etc.). Then illustrates the salient features of the city after 1000 A.D, coinciding with the rise of new social and economic structures. Will be treated the main types of public and private buildings, the recovery of construction techniques almost disappeared during the Middle Ages, the phenomenon of so-called "Romanesque" architecture. An integral part of the course will be the exercises.

Didactic methods

The educational activities consist of classroom lectures and hands-on activities that target the recognition and stratigraphic analysis of medieval architectures. The lessons are transmitted by video in one of four classrooms of the partner universities and remotely for remote students attending. Lectures are also recorded and made ¿¿available to subscribers . The exercises will be concentrated in a few days so that participation in outdoor is also possible for students who do not attend classes in Trento. In addition, the PowerPoint lectures are available to students, after their request to the teacher.

Learning assessment procedures

oral examination on the lecture notes , bibliography and other references indicated throughout the course. Written essay relating to one of the buildings that will be analyzed during the architecture archeology exercises . The aim of the audit is to ascertain the ability to critically frame the issue and be able to analyze and recognize correctly contexts and archaeological materials presented during the course.

Reference texts

Lessons notes. Other texts and sources will be suggested during the course. Not attending students must agree with the teacher on the program (also the not attending students of practical class with arch. G. Gentilini)
