Training objectives
- Learning how to locate archaeologically and historically an inscribed monument and to approach the study of an ancient inscription both as monument and as document; learning to read and comment Greek and Roman inscriptions, using the specific vocabulary of the discipline; acquire the basic knowledge about the use of inscriptions as sources for the study of Greek and Roman history; learning how to use the main informatic tools for the study of the ancient inscriptions.
Prerequisites
- Even if it is not strictly required, it is advisable to have some knowledge of the Latin language, even if only at a basic level.
Course programme
- Taxonomy of Greek and Latin inscriptions; Greek and Latin onomastic: common people and emperors; central government and local administrations; the edition of the Greek and Latin inscriptions; digital epigraphy.Instrumentum inscriptum.
Didactic methods
- Lectures, seminars, tutorials at the Museo Lapidario Maffeiano di Verona
Learning assessment procedures
- Oral exam. The student will present a poster illustrating the critical edition of a stone inscription or, alternatively, an inscription classified as instrumentum inscriptum. This poster will allow us to further investigate issues discussed during the course.
