1: Introduction of Problem in Scientific Context

The Goal 17 of SDGs emphasizes on “Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development”. Additionally the Goals 6, 11 and12 of the SDGs also focus on sustainable management of water and sanitation, ensuring sustainable production and making the cities as inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable by 2030. The goals have further emphasized specially under these domains to achieve the management of water and chemicals which must be environmentally sound and in accordance with the internationally agreed frameworks as well as to take initiatives towards reducing the release of waste towards air, soil and water towards reducing negative impacts on the human beings by 2020. But it has overall greater aim towards reducing the waste generation by 2030 through preventing, reducing, recycling or reusing the waste (UN, 2021). There are rising concerns on the issues worldwide in regards of “calls for increasing imagination and innovation to address global waste management challenges”, it was also recognized by UN on World Habitat Day in 2018. The UN Human Settlements Program mentioned that “99% of purchased items are discarded within six months, and the world produces two billion tons of waste annually” and it called for small adjustments towards our consumption styles in our daily lives. So this research project will specially focus on observing the impacts of waste management programs and plans in terms of achieving goal 17 of SDGs. It also aims to assess that which goals of SDGs are least and most affected in regards of creation and reporting in waste management and treatment services”.

2: Relevance of the problem

The faster and ongoing growth of urbanization in recent past has resulted towards negative effects on cities in various ways including social, economic as well as environmental challenges. The environmental challenges include reduction of available local resources and resources management in terms of sustainable development (Elsheekh, Kamel, Elsherif, & Shalaby, 2021). So the need of SDGs created. The SDGs are not only capable of measuring the changes in people’s wellbeing, the economic development challenges, better environment but also emphasize how such changes can be included (Gurbo , 2021). So there is need to addressing the issues of waste management by creating public awareness, designing the waste management programs and plans as well as designing waste management reporting mechanism. It was mentioned by Executive Director of UN-Habitat that to tackle the challenges of waste management demands that “people rethink” and requires “imagination and innovation”. It was further mentioned that we can achieve the goal 17 by our individual efforts and collective actions for making this world greener, cleaner, safer, happier and healthier (UN, 2021). There is a role of every single person, collective societal action and role of corporate and non-corporate organization in this regard, so together this can be achieved.

3: The Research Methodology

This research will divide the methodology in two parts as below - The first part will discuss the concept of “integrated solid waste management” and the role of “solid waste management” sector to achieve SDGs through analyzing the SDGs in regards of plans and programs waste management. - The second part will arrange the goals from the “most affected by waste management to least affected”. - This research study will involve the people from diverse background including the researchers, academics, experts of the field, concerned government department and private institutions through the means of experts’ questionnaire and structured interviews.

 4: The Research Objectives

Below are the objectives of research study - To observe the impacts of waste management programs and plans to achieve goal 17 of SDGs. - To assess that which goals of SDGs are “most affected by waste management to least affected” in regards of managerial tools for public value planning, creation and reporting in waste management and treatment services”. - To find out recommendations from the key respondents for achieving the goal 17 of SDGs in regards of waste management innovations for sustainable development.

5: The Expected Outcomes

Below are the expected outcomes of this research study - Firstly this research study will observe the impacts of waste management programs and plans in Europe, especially Italy for achieving goal 17 of SDGs. - Secondly this study will assess that which goals of SDGs are most affected and which are least affected by waste management in terms of issues of creation and reporting in waste management and treatment services. - Thirdly this research study will bring the set of recommendations from the key respondents of this research study towards achieving the goals 17 of SDGs will special focus on the innovations in waste management and sustainable development.
