Course programme
- Annual course taught in English. The course is divided in theoretical lessons held by Professor Emanuela Ammendola and language sessions with language instructors. The course introduces the main phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic aspects of the English language. It gives students the conceptual, descriptive and metalinguistic tools pivotal to the development of a linguistic and pragmatic awareness of the English language. A more practical part consists in the analysis of authentic materials including different text types and communicative contexts. The interactive nature of the course calls for an active participation in the classroom during lessons, which will be enriched by practice exercises and by the retrieval of online texts.
Practical lessons by language instructors will focus on ortographic, phonetical, syntactical and lexical aspects of the English language. Didactic methods
- The course is divided into practical lesson by language instructors and theoretical lesson by Professor Emanuela Ammendola. Practical language sessions focussed on the acquisition of linguistic and communicative competence (level B1+/B2) will be held for smaller groups dividing students in different classes. Language sessions aim at providing students with knowledge of grammar and a linguistic and communicative comptence at least at B1 level. The theoretical module is thought to enable students to analyse different textual typologies in different contexts with attention to their linguistic, cultural and communicative aspects.
Learning assessment procedures
- The final exam is divided into two parts: written/ oral. The written part is the same for regular attenders and non attenders and is based on the material used during the course including grammar and lexical exercises, a reading comprehension and a writing part. Regular attenders can take an end-of-course test for the written part of the exam. Students with a valid language certification are exempted from the written part of the exam (see the table for English language certifications). The oral part for attenders consists of an oral presentation during the course. The oral part for non attenders consists of a conversation oral test.
