Training objectives
- As Fredson Bowers wrote, " Many a literary critic has investigated the past ownership and mechanical condition of his secondhand automobile [.] more thoroughly than he has looked into the qualifications of the text on which his theories rest." That's why the course will offer an updated knowledge of the principles of textual criticism and of the textual transmission of the masterpieces of Italian literature.
Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of the English as well as of the Italian language
Course programme
- The course is divided into two parts: the first one concerns the most problematic notions of textual criticism (archetype, bipartite stemma and so on)..
The second one concerns how to do a critical edition and is focused on the tradition of major authors such as Petrarca, Machiavelli. Didactic methods
- Lessons, practical applications and group discussions.
Please note that, if our students cannot attend one or more classes, all lessons are recorded: thus it is possible to watch them on the internet both live and on delay (written instructions are found on the "Corso di Laurea" web page; please don't ask me how it works). Learning assessment procedures
- - The exam consists in short written answers to a number of questions related to the more important issues of the classes (10 to 30 questions). The time of the exam is about 40 minutes. If necessary the examiner can also pose some question in spoken form.
