Training objectives
- The goal is to show how to read an ancient literary source. The student will learn 1) to give the concept of 'source' a definition; 2) to classify each source taking into account its own tipology; 3) to understand the necessity of the sources in the study/reconstruction of the historical past; 4) to understand the necessity of a critical comparation between sources of different tipology, while reconstructing the ancient Greek and Roman History; in particular, to understand the usefulness of the literary sources in the archaeological research; 5) to understand the necessity of the critic and selection of sources in the reconstruction of the ancient Greek and Roman History.

Course programme
- The texts of historians and of geographers are the best sources for the archaeological research, but any literary text can be useful for the aims of archaeology. The course offers sessions of two hours each: a first part, theoretical, on the concept of 'source', and a second part, practical, on its use: the student will be provided with examples on the use of different types of sources in the study/reconstruction of Greek and Roman History.

- written exam : about 40 open questions to be answered in three hours.
