Training objectives
- The course is divided into two modules. The first, focusing on Geography and History of Cartography; the second has monographic character and will be dedicated to the deconstruction of the cartographic materials, their use in geo-historical research for study the landscape transformations, with particular attention to authors of the cartographic production in the Este Dukedom. The training objective is to stimulate critical thinking skills in reading maps understood as social outcomes of territorial processes.
Prerequisites
- General knowledge of the problems studied by Historical geography and the History of Cartography.
Course programme
- The course will explore the cartographic materials and their usefulness in geo-historical research for the study of landscape changes. The course will address some issues of geography Renaissance with a particular attention to the geographical interests of the Este court, and the relationship between geography and literature in the Orlando furioso by Ludovico Ariosto.
The course also includes visits to the archives that preserve cartographic materials analyzed during the course (Ariostea Library, State Archive of Ferrara). On this occasion, they will discuss the ways to search and cataloging of cartographic materials through the OPAC.
To mark the centenary of the First World War will be carried out a study on the relationship between geography and social persuasion. Didactic methods

- The learning assessment will be performed by an oral examination of about 30 minutes. Will be proven knowledge on the topics coursework with particular attention to the level of critical thinking skills developed by the candidates, the ability to create connections between historical and social backgrounds and skills in critical reading and analysis of cartographic documents.
