Training objectives
- In-depth study of Latin language and literature, in the perspective of the relationship with modern literatures and cultures, in order to acquire useful skills for identifying the relationships between the history of tradition and reception of texts, as well as historical-cultural and intertextual relations between the works of the classical era and, on the one hand, those of Latin literature from the Late Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Humanities, and on the other hand, modern literatures and especially Latinic literature.
Prerequisites
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of Latin language, literature and philology, acquired in previous Latin language and literature courses.
Course programme
- Institutional part:
The reception and fortune of Latin texts from the late-ancient era to the modern age, in their interweaving with the problems of textual transmission.
Monographic part:
The history of the epigram in the western cultural tradition and the formation and reception of Martial's text.
a) Martial, Epigrammata, book XI: reading of selected passages (XI 1-43; 53-54; 56; 78; 85; 89-92; 104; 108), with linguistic, metric and historical-literary analysis.
b) Formative stages of the text, transmission and fortune of the Martial's books in ancient times:
- circulation of the text, ancient Martial's editions
- the presence of Martial in Latin literature of the imperial and late ancient ages; Christian authors.
c) The oldest manuscript tradition, its various phases in the late ancient period, the families of manuscripts, the subscriptiones.
d) Nachleben in the Renaissance and modern age. A choice of passages will be proposed for the study of Martial's influence on humanistic and modern literature and on theories of the epigram from the 18th century forward (Aus. Epigr. 1, 19-20, 75; Cento nupt. p. 139 Green; Luxorius Anth. Lat. 289 R.2; 297 R.2; Panormita Herm. I 1; II 2; 15-16; 37; Pontano, Pruritus, carmi incipitario e conclusivo; Parthenopeus 1,1,1-15; 1,11; Epigrammata Bobiensia 28; Mart. I 14.). Didactic methods
- Lectures and interactive lessons with the possibility of seminar activities.

- Oral exam (questions about influence of Latin literature and texts; reading and translation of some passages from the Latin texts included in the programme).For the students whose study plan foresees more than 12 credits in L-FIL-LET/04, an additional written exam (translation from Latin) is due.
