Training objectives
- On the wake of the so-called monographic courses (usual in Italian universities until the reform of the so-called 3+2), the course addresses 2 specific issues related to the linguistic history of the Italian Renaissance: 1.the linguistic debate ("questione della lingua") in 16th century. 2. the close reading of Machiavelli's "Discorso intorno alla nostra lingua. The students will be acquainted with the most important grammars and linguistic treatises appeared in the first half of the century

Course programme
- The course addresses the linguistic debate of the first half of the 16th century (Machiavelli's "Discorso intorno alla nostra lingua", Bembo's "Prose" etc.) and puts the treatises into context: students will get acquainted with the purposes and the cultural background of the different theses.

- - The exam consists in short written answers to a number of questions related to the more important issues of the classes (10 to 30 questions). The time of the exam is about 40 minutes. If necessary the examiner can also pose questions to the student in spoken form.
