Training objectives

The course aims to provide the basic notions and insights necessary for the study of Latin handwriting and its products (libraries and documentaries) in the late medieval period (XIII-XIV centuries).
In-depth topics.
- The Italian vernacular manuscript of the Origins (13th century, second half, 14th first half);
- The figure of the notary in the late Middle Ages (XIII-XIV centuries).

Prerequisites

It is advisable to have a basic knowledge both of the European history and culture in the late medieval period (XIII-XIV century) and of the Latin.
For foreign students: good skills to read and speak Italian.

Course programme

The course introduces the student to the scientific analysis of Latin handwriting and its products (books and documents) in the late Middle Ages.
The following main topics will be discussed:
Principles and methods of paleographic analysis. Brief description and historical development of the Latin abbreviated system. Synthetic panorama of Latin handwriting in the sec. XIII and XIV, with the analysis and commentary of reproductions of manuscripts. Foundations of late-medieval diplomacy. Definition of document. Extrinsic and intrinsic characters of the document. Public document and private document. The figure of the notary in late medieval period (sec. XIII-XIV).

Didactic methods

Oral lessons, with the projection of images in Power Point and the comment and analysis of reproductions of Latin manuscripts and documents from the late medieval era.
Lectures will be recorded and archived on the FAD-Se @ platform.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral exam with possible reading test of the tables distributed in class and / or uploaded on the teacher's website.
