Training objectives
- In-depth knowledge of a special topic in early modern European history, especially during the 16th and 17th centuries. Ability to connect the past and the present and to understand the dynamics of change grounded on the study of a key-moment in European history.

Course programme
- Papacy and the Popes at the beginning of Early Modern Age, 1450-1600 ca. Papacy in the 15th Century. Conciliarism and papal absolutism. The building of the papal state. The Popes in Italian and European politics. Early 16th century religious crisis. Critics of papal absolutism since Savonarola through the Reformers. Reformation, Catholic reformation, Counter-reformation. The Council of Trient. The Catholic church and Italian history.
Didactic methods
- 30 hours. Lectures, with the aid of audiovisuals.
Learning assessment procedures
- Oral or written examination, as the students like, during the Summer session, oral only during further sessions. Written examination requires answering three questions on the subject of the course.
