Training objectives

The course aims at analyzing some crucial aspects of psychological development in childhood, with particular attention to language development, individual and contextual factors underlying some differences during growth and adulthood. Starting from the re-interpretation of some of the best-known studies of child development, in the light of the most modern scientific literature, the course also aims at analyzing in depth the methodological aspects of research in childhood.
Expected outcomes are:
Knowledge and understanding:
To acquire a thorough and critical knowledge of some psychological developmental processes in early childhood.
To acquire an in-depth knowledge of recent research developments in some specific areas of development during childhood.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
Ability to use theoretical knowledge to identify crucial aspects of some areas of children's development in early childhood.
Ability to use psychological knowledge to identify developmental risk and/or protective factors.
Ability to use contemporary psychological research findings critically in the design of early childhood interventions.

Course programme

The course consists of 20 hours of video-recorded teaching, with face-to-face meetings, the dates of which will be communicated by calendar. The course contents are
typical language development: theories; pre-linguistic communication; speaking to children; vocabulary and grammar development.
atypical language development: risk factors; language in atypical populations; specific language and learning disorders.
bilingualism.
autism spectrum disorders: what contemporary psychological research shows.
some important aspects of development, revisited in the light of the most modern research (depth perception, attachment, etc.).

Didactic methods

The course includes 20 hours of video-recorded teaching. The video-recorded teaching will cover the course contents: typical and atypical language development; bilingualism; what the most recent psychological research findings say about autism; review of some well-known developmental psychology studies. The course also includes face-to-face meetings, during which students will have the opportunity to further explore specific lesson content.

Learning assessment procedures

The objective of the examination is to assess the level of achievement of the training objectives outlined above.
The examination is written, open-book, and involves the writing of a report of approximately 5 pages, in which the participants will have to investigate a topic of the course of their choice. Students can use the material provided by the lecturer in the classroom to write the report. The guidelines for writing reports will be published in the classroom in the first part of the course.

Reference texts

The course does not include a textbook. Students can use the slides and lecture notes; multimedia material, scientific articles and monographs included in the classroom.
