Training objectives
- 1. Learning of the epistemological foundations of scientific thought;
2. Learning of the basic relationship between science and society (1st Dublin descriptor).
3. Acquisition of collaborative and interdisciplinary skills;
4. Acquisition of the ability to apply analytic methods to problems and issues of contemporary science (2nd Dublin descriptor).
5. Acquisition of the ability to build and communicate arguments about the concepts dealt with in the course, and to develop them autonomously (3rd, 4th and 5th Dublin descriptors) Prerequisites

Course programme
- The course offers a general introduction to contemporary philosophy of science and to the study of the relationships between science and society. The first part, devoted to the philosophy of science, deals with topics such as the scientific explanation and reasoning, and with classical philosophical approaches, such as inductivism, falsificationism, and Kuhn's concept of paradigm. The second part, devoted to the relationships between science and society, consists of an introduction to the sociology of science and to related issues, such as public communication of science.
THE PROGRAMME IS VALID UNTIL JULY 2024 Didactic methods
- Standard lectures with the use of slides and the reading of primary sources. During the lectures, the teacher engages the students with discussins about the concepts analysed and their application on specific cases.
Learning assessment procedures
- Written exam, which focuses on the texts of the authors treated and the topics covered in the course. The test consists of some closed-ended questions and some open-ended questions concerning both parts of the course.
