Training objectives
- The course aims at introducing social psychology and group psychology and teaching students social psychology concepts and methods, with a particular focus on the most relevant issues for the profession of educator.
Therefore the student, at the end of the course:
1. Will master the main constructs, the main theories, and the main research methodologies of social psychology;
2. Will master issues related to intragroup dynamics (for example, teamwork and productivity) and intergroup relations (for example, stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination);
3. Will understand how theories and methods of social psychology can be applied in educational and care settings (for example, strategies for reducing aggressive behavior and promoting prosocial behavior; strategies to overcome exclusion and prejudice);
4. Will have a critical sense and autonomy of judgment towards theories and research in social psychology;
5. Will know the specific vocabulary of the discipline and will use it appropriately. Prerequisites

Course programme
- The course will introduce basic social psychology topics (research methodology in social psychology; social perception; the Self, social influence, aggression and prosociality). Subsequently, the course will address intragroup dynamics, i.e. social exclusion and group productivity, and intergroup processes, i.e. stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination, their determinants and strategies to reduce them.
Didactic methods
- Mainly lectures supported by slides, plus discussions, debates, and exercises on social psychology research.
Students will also be invited to participate to a social psychology research, and participation to such research will be taken into account in the final grade. Learning assessment procedures
- Written exam consisting in questions with open answers. The evaluation of each question will be based on the following criteria: knowledge, precision, and completeness of the answer; understanding and re-elaboration of the contents; correct use of the specific language of the discipline.
