Training objectives
- The objectives of the course are: acquisition of the ability to read complex texts; achievement of an adequate knowledge of basic notions of literary texts and the ability to critique the texts both within and across disciplines.
Prerequisites
- Knowledge of French at B2 level is required.
Course programme
- Ghosts – a literary paradigm between the 18th and 19th centuries.
The course has as its objective the analysis of the main themes and literary forms of French literature of the 18th and 19th centuries, with a specific and methodological focus on the concept of the invisible - Invisibility and its rapport with the scientific, philosophic, and literary spectrums of the century.
The course offers a varied and articulated view into the relationship between modern man and the paranormal realm (in its most scientific sense as well as that more tied to the world of imagination) within French society in the 18th and 19th centuries. We will analyse themes that are apparently quite distant, to show that when placed in opposition within a literary writing prospective, they prove to be useful tools in the critical observation of modern European culture. Didactic methods
- Lectures (with AV material support including films and photographs).
The lectures will require active participation from the students. Learning assessment procedures
- A student’s acquired knowledge will be verified by evaluating an adequate knowledge of the basic concepts and the acquisition of a capacity to critique the studied themes on the basis of the specific discipline [L-LIN 03], within the wider area [10/H1] which is dedicated to French literature, including interdisciplinary relationships with areas of visual culture and European literature.
Theoretical knowledge will be evaluated by asking questions on the subject matter and the themes of the course, so that the student can be evaluated for both synchronic and diachronic aspects.
There will be a 4 hour written exam (for those students who attend classes) with 4 questions (2 regarding critique and 2 on the texts), or, alternatively, an oral exam (for both students who attend, and those who do not.) Reference texts
- THOSE STUDENTS WHO DO NOT ATTEND THIS COURSE ARE REQUIRED TO REQUEST A MEETING WITH THE PROFESSOR TO DISCUSS ALTERNATIVES.
