Training objectives

The course has the main objective to provide a general knowledge of theater culture from ancient Greece to the twentieth century. Through the analysis of different historical periods, the purpose is the acquisition of the main ideas of the theater. For this we examine authors, plays, descriptions of shows. Ultimate goal is the acquisition of the idea of theater as a complex phenomenon and not merely literary, especially in social and anthropological.

Course programme

1)Outlines of theater history from antiquity to the twentieth century (30 hours): using audiovisual material is traced a panorama of the scenic tradition and its main historical developments: from classical Greece to medieval scene; the rediscovery of the ancient theater in the Renaissance to the birth of national theaters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; the birth of the bourgeois theater in the nineteenth century; the main movements of the theater in the twentieth century.

2) TOTO', actor comedian of Neapolitan popular theater and cinema (30 hours): the history of the Neapolitan theater tradition of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; authors and plays; the actor's tradition of popular theater in Naples. The figure of Totò is examined as a pinnacle of tradition, through the passage of his work as an actor from the theater to the cinema.

Didactic methods

Lectures with projection of audiovisual materials, classroom discussion.

During lessons, audiovisual material is used: therefore, for distant students, a good Internet connection is highly recommended.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral examination: students must answer at least three questions, through which - making use of the discussions that took place during the course - they must demonstrate a historical and critical skills in the knowledge of the subject and not merely notional. Any thesis threads written on a topic chosen by the student.
