Training objectives

Students will be provided 1) the general outline of Greek history from its origins to the death of Alexander (323 BC); 2) the origins of the greek historical thought and its development from time to time, with particular reference to the fifth and fourth centuries BCE; 3) skills of how modern critical thought is based on the ancient critical thought; 4) reading/ interpretation of the sources, analysis and comparative study of sources as indispensable tools for the knowledge of the ancient world; 5) to the use of maps not only as a study-tool, but as an opportunity for reflecting on the events and their development; 6) to the identification of the correct link(s) between cause(s) and effect(s); 7) how crucial the study of the classical languages ¿¿for the knowledge of the ancient history is; 8) the specific cultural ties between the ancient and the modern world.

Prerequisites

Basic high school knowledge.

Course programme

The course consists of two parts:
1. The Making of the Historical Discourse: Examples from Historiography of the Classical Age, especially on events of Greek History of Archaic and Classical Age.
2. The Greek History from the Mycenaean Age to 323 BC (manual).

Didactic methods

1. Lectures.
2. Reading and analysis of translated ancient work (into Italian), with focused references to the ancient original texts; discussion and debate.
3. Use of informatic tools and maps.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral exam (20/30 minutes, approximately): two questions on general issues of Greek history (manual); one question on particular issues of Greek history debated during lectures.

- Thucydides, Histories, Book I.
- Herodotus, Histories, Books I and V.

2. Essays and manuals:
- R. Vattuone, Historíe. Lezioni introduttive al corso di Storia greca, Bologna, ed. Pàtron, 2006.
- D. Musti, Storia greca. Linee di sviluppo dall'età micenea all'età romana, Roma-Bari, ed. Laterza, 1989 (and subsequent editions), or H. Bengtson, Storia greca, I-II, Bologna, ed. Il Mulino, 1985 (and subsequent editions).
