Training objectives
- The student will learn to:
¿ Survey /examine the current state of literature teaching in English in Italian secondary schools; analyze the indications of the Ministry of Education;
¿ Apply different strategies of textual analysis / close reading;
¿ Examine and apply different teaching methods and approaches to literature; particular attention will be paid to literary genres theories, as well as interdisciplinary and intercultural perspectives;
¿ Examine and evaluate textbooks;
¿ Create materials and activities that are appropriate to different learning styles as well as students with special needs;
¿ Learn to plan lessons or learning units based on a variety of teaching approaches;
¿ Examine the current curriculum of literature teaching in English in secondary schools, with a view to opening it up to literatures of the English-speaking countries in a postcolonial perspective. Prerequisites
- Advanced knowledge of the English language (B2+ or C1) is required. Course attendance is strongly recommended.
Course programme
- Starting from an examination of the current state of literature teaching in the English class in secondary schools, this course will explore a variety of teaching methods and approaches. Students will be required to examine and produce materials and activities based on the different approaches explored, with particular attention devoted to intercultural perspectives and new literatures of the English-speaking countries. The course will also investigate and test strategies aimed at students’ involvement and inclusive didactics in the field of literature teaching in the English class.
Didactic methods
- A mixture of lectures, workshops, seminars, site visits, class debates, and research challenges. The lessons will have a practical approach aimed at developing skills and sharing good practices in the field of lesson planning as well as teaching. Students will be required to analyse, plan, share teaching practices, and teach/simulate a lesson in context.
Learning assessment procedures
- The final grade will be assessed as follows:
1. Students are required to produce a written teaching plan (Learning Unit) on a topic previously discussed with the instructor (in Italian or English). All Learning Units must be typed up on a computer and submitted at least 1 week before the final exam/oral examination.
2. The oral examination will take place in two phases:
a. Students are required to teach a real or simulated class, in English, during the course; the lesson must be part of the Learning Unit they will submit before their final exam. The lesson will be considered part of the oral examination.
b. On the day of the final exam, the oral examination will focus on:
i. Discussion of the written Learning Unit;
ii. Discussion of the simulated/real lesson;
iii. Questions on the course material listed in the bibliography and/or made available by the instructor throughout the course.
Students not attending the course will have the same exam format, but they will be required to teach the simulated class on the day of the final exam. Reference texts
