Training objectives
- Students know language tools and basic notions of morphology, lexicology and lexicography. The course will provide them with further notions of diachronic linguistics and tools for the analysis and comprehension of texts belonging to different periods. Students are expected to advance to level C2.

- Advanced knowledge of French (B2-C1 level)
Course programme
- During the practical lessons, held by native language teachers, students will refine their comprehension and expression skills both oral and written, through written compositions, reading texts, conversation in French. The lessons held by the titular teacher will be divided into two parts: the first lessons will introduce students to the history and evolution of French language (from the Middle Ages to the 17th century); the second part will focus on the topic of translation in Renaissance France. Some examples of translations from Italian into French will be analysed, with a special focus on translations for teaching purposes. Among those, the works by Jean-Pierre de Mesmes, grammarian and translator belonging to the Pléiade, author of the "Grammaire italienne" and of a prose translation of L. Ariosto's "Suppositi". Moreover, a series of seminars with national and international scholars will be organised on the works and personality of some important French translators of the 16th century.
Students who do not attend lessons are required to study the suggested texts (see bibliography below). However, recordings of past lessons will be made available as a didactic support. Didactic methods
- Lessons held by the titual teacher, entirely in French + lessons held by native language teachers. Both parts will be held in the first semester. All course materials and information will be uploaded on Google Classroom (access code for the theoretical course: h2zilbp; for "lettorato": wb6wug5).
Recordings will be provided to help not-attending students. Learning assessment procedures
- The final exam consists in a written test and an oral test:
1) A written test of comprehension and writing (3 hours). The use of monolingual dictionaries is allowed;
2) Oral exam on the topics of the theoretical module (after successful completion of the written test). Reference texts

- M. Huchon, Histoire de la langue française, Le Livre de Poche (MANDATORY for students who do not attend classes);
- Histoire des traductions en langue française (XVe et XVIe siècles), sous la direction de V. Duché, Éditions Verdier, 2015 (chapters II, III and VI).
