Training objectives
- Students will acquire a linguistic, communicative and cultural competence of oral and written English (level C1/C2 QCER). At the end of the course students will acquire the basic comptences in English language and pragmatics. Students will be able to interpret different textual typologies (textual structure, cohesion, coherence, rethorical strategies) with a particular emphasis on literay, advertising and tourism texts. Students will be able to analyse and translate texts from a linguistic and cultural perspective. Students will be able to communicate and use English language for professional and academic contexts. Students will be able to produce detailed and well structured written texts. Aim of the course is to develop a methodological and practical competence of the English language and to understand that the translation process is not only a linguistic exercise but a cultural and pragmatic one.
Prerequisites
- Possession of B2 level. Linguistic competences will be evaluated at the beginning of the course.
Course programme
- The theorical module is focused on Critical Discourse Analysis and the main Cultural Translation Theories. We will tackle the following themes:
1. Theories and methodologies of CDA
2. Discourse and context
3. Discourse Analysis and genres
4. The grammar of discourse
5. Lexicon and terminology
6. Discursive and rethorical strategies of literary, adevrtising and tourism texts
7. Cultural translation
8. Transaltion and ideology
9. Practical translation of literary, advertising and tourism texts
10. Gender in/equality in texts
The interactive nature of the course calls for an active participation in the classroom during lessons, which will be enriched by practice exercises and by the retrieval of online texts also available in google classroom.
Practical lessons by language instructors will tackle ortographic, phonetical, syntactical and lexical aspects of the English language. Didactic methods
- The course is divided into a theoretical module and practical lessons with mother-tongue teachers. The theoretical module is focused on CDA and Cultural Translation. All lessons are in English. The interactive nature of the course requires an active participation during lessons, which will be enriched by practical exercises and by the retrieval of online texts. Materials will be available in google classroom. Students will prepare a portfolio of their own activities and will be asked to produce a translation or a power point presentation.
Learning assessment procedures
- The course is divided in theoretical lessons held by Professor Eleonora Federici and language sessions with language instructors. The final exam is both written (essay writing) and oral. The oral exam is based on the bibliography and materials in google classroom. Students who attend classes will be asked to participate to workshop activities and to prepare a portfolio.
