Training objectives
- Students will know two of the most famous “literary polemics” of the Spanish Golden Age: 1) Góngora vs. Quevedo; 2) Cervantes vs. Lope de Vega. Provide the students with the adequate skills to analyze and comment on literary texts (poetry, fiction and drama) of the 16th and 17th Centuries.
Prerequisites
- Owning a B2 level of Spanish language.
Course programme
- Two of the most famous “literary polemics”of the Spanish Golden Age will be analysed in detail. The topics of the lectures are:
1. Góngora’s Poetry: texts anthology. The Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea and the Soledades.
2. Quevedo’s Poetry: texts anthology
3. Novelas ejemplares, by Cervantes: El licenciado Vidriera and El coloquio de los perros.
4. Novelas a Marcia Leonarda, by Lope de Vega: La prudente venganza.
5. El castigo sin venganza, by Lope de Vega. Didactic methods
- Lectures (25 hours) and analysis of the texts (20 hours).
Learning assessment procedures
- Students will take a written exam divided into two parts:
1. Theoretical development of one of the topics of the course (50% of the final note)
Góngora’s Poetry;
Quevedo’s Poetry;
Cervantes’s Short Novel: El licenciado Vidriera;
Cervantes’s Short Novel: El coloquio de los perros;
Lope de Vega’s Short Novel: La prudente venganza;
Lope de Vega on stage: El castigo sin venganza.
2. Text analysis (50% of the final note)
Sonnets, letrillas, décimas, romances and the Fábula y Polifemo y Galatea and Soledades, by Luis de Góngora;
Quevedo’s Sonnets.
