Training objectives
- The course aims to provide: 1) the ability to analyse complex texts of various genres (non-fiction, narrative, theatrical) 2) knowledge of contemporary historical, philosophical, political and literary contexts using sociological, culturological and psychoanalytical methodologies 3) skills in the management of connections between interdisciplinary and intermediary perspectives (cinema, music, theatre, graphic novels).

Course programme
- The course, divided into two modules, deals with the question of the representability and expressibility of the world as manifested in particular in the Vienna of Freud and Wittgenstein (the so-called Great Vienna) and then in the second half of the twentieth century, through the reading of some key works of Austrian literary civilisation. The first section is devoted to the early twentieth century, with readings of the literary works of Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Robert Musil; the second section then turns to the second twentieth century through readings of the works of Ingeborg Bachmann, Thomas Bernhard and Christoph Ransmayr.
The first module deals with works representative of the so-called "Sprachkrise" and the solutions to this crisis, with close readings of "Ein Brief", the so-called Letter from Lord Chandos, and Musil's short story "Die Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törleß". This will be complemented by the second section of the course focusing on three of the most important voices in post-World War II German-language literature, till nowadays. Didactic methods
- Lectures of 4 hours per week, for 8 weeks. Traditional didactics will be complemented by the viewing of films dedicated to Austrian particularities and linked to the literary texts on the programme (Glawogger-Willi, Haneke, Seethaler, Schlöndorff, Schroeter).
Learning assessment procedures
- Oral examination on the programme (in German and in Italian).
