Training objectives
- Being able to analyse complexe filmic texts using structuralist methodologies, textual criticism and with the instruments of cultural studies. Knowing the history of German Cinema

- None
Course programme
- Works of Rainer Werner Fassbinder: Theater and Film (1969-1982). The students have to collocate the work of RWF in the context of some important discourses for the West German Culture of the period after WW II, among others: gender, history, nation, politics, relation between german culture and jewish culture, immigration
Didactic methods
- Seminar with students' oral presentations
Learning assessment procedures
- Seminar paper (10-15 pages) on a film of RWF, on a discourse activated by his works, on intertextual relations between his films (theatre) and contemporary or antecedent works.
Reference texts
- 7 films by Fassbinder (BRD-Trilogie, In einem Jahr mit 13 Monden, Fontane Effi Briest, Katzelmacher, Der amerikanische Soldat), + 3 plays (Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod, Die bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant, Tropfen auf Heiße Steine).
