Training objectives

The achievement of a high level of competence in the Spanish language (C1/C2), increasing the quantity and quality of the expressive resources in both written and oral fields. Provide students with basic knowledge of history, theory and practice of translation, particularly with respect to the various methodological approaches relating to this area. Deepen the study and the practice of literary translation from Spanish into Italian language.

Prerequisites

21 credits in Spanish Language or a competence in Spanish of a level of at least B2.

Course programme

This is the course for the students of the first year of “Lingue e Letterature Straniere” Master Degree and it consists of two annual modules:
A) a grammar module;
B) a translation module, which is divided into two sections: 1st semester: “History, theory and practice of translation”; 2nd semester: “The literary translation from Spanish into Italian”.
The lectures of the grammar module are designed to strengthen the students’ oral and written skills through linguistic exercises.

The first section of the module B ("History, theory and practice of translation") provides outlines of the history of translation (with particular reference to the Hispanic context) and involves the analysis of the main theoretical contributions about translation. In the second section of the module B we will delve into the translation techniques and will be confronted with examples of literary translation from Spanish into Italian, examining various contemporary Spanish works and their Italian versions.

Learning assessment procedures

The modality of examination is different for attending and non-attending students.

Non-attending students will take the exam (written+oral) in one of the official dates. They will have access to the oral part only if they pass the written test. The written exam consists of a series of open questions (between 5 and 8) that will cover ALL the texts listed in the bibliography. The duration of the written test will be two hours. Along with the grammar module, there will not be an “official” assessment for the non-attending students, but the grammar and language skills will be tested during the written and oral part. The oral part will focus on the issues raised in the written test and on further topics of the program. Both tests —written and oral— will be held in Spanish.

Attending students can take a mid-term written test at the end of the first semester; it will consist of 5 open questions that focus on the part of the program concerning the first section ("History, theory and practice of translation"). The duration of the mid-term written test is one hour and thirty minutes. The final exam consists of a translation of one of the chapters of a Spanish novel unpublished in Italy and proposed by the teacher. The translation will be followed by a comment that explains precisely the translation choices made by the student. The written work must be sent to the teacher at least one week before the final exam; during the final exam the student will take the oral exam. During the oral part, the student should be able to justify the translation choices he/she made in his/her translational project.
Along with the grammar module, there will not be an “official” assessment for the attending students, but the grammar and language skills will be tested and evaluated regularly during the lectures and exercises.
