Training objectives
- Through the activities of translanguaging, contrastive textual analysis, translation and revision, students develop knowledge and comprehension skills in the field of translation on both a theoretical and practical level, become acquainted with the basic concepts of translation theory and learn to relate their acquired knowledge to the strategies applied in translation practice (objectives: Knowledge and comprehension skills, Applied knowledge and comprehension skills).
They will also learn to reflect on the structural, lexical and morpho-syntactic characteristics of different text types, to evaluate them from a translation perspective and to apply the most suitable research and translation strategies autonomously (goal: Autonomy of judgement), to work autonomously on expanding their own linguistic and translanguaging skills, on the ability to choose translation strategies and to justify their choices. Course programme
- During the course, the theoretical foundations of translation will be covered (including the concept of equivalence, the translation approach according to text types and functions and the purpose of translation), activities of translanguaging analysis and research, translation and revision will be carried out, and some translation problems and strategies will be reflected upon (translation of realia, translation of fictional orality, diatopic and diastratic variation from a translation perspective, translation problems and strategies in the literary, political and administrative-legal spheres, machine translation).
Didactic methods
- The course comprises lectures in the second semester.
Translation analysis, translation and revision activities as well as the presentation of translation research aimed at solving individual translation problems are expected; attendance is strongly recommended. Learning assessment procedures
- Written assignment: paper (term paper) on a translation problem, 60,000-80,000 characters. The paper must be handed in one week before the exam date. Students may replace the paper with activities assigned during the course (translation and revision, analysis and translation research).
