Training objectives
- Students will acquire a knowledge of subject-specific English relating to the field of Medical Biotechnology. They will study morphosyntactic elements at a linguistic level equivalent to B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference, and will learn lexis, phrases and functions relevant to the field of Medical Biotechnology. There will also be the opportunity to approach reading scientific texts in English, and to develop passive awareness of grammar and specific vocabulary.
Prerequisites
- Students should have a level of English equivalent to A2 on the Common European Framework of Reference.
Course programme
- The course is divided into two parts: the first consists in 30 hours of grammar lessons at B1 level; the second part consists of 18 classroom hours about English for Medical Biotechnology. This latter part aims to provide students with working knowledge of specialised vocabulary, and to develop reading and listening comprehension skills.
Grammar lessons cover the following points:
Determiners, Quantifiers and Articles
Present Tenses
Past Tenses
Future Tenses
Adjectives and Adverbs
Comparatives and Superlatives
Relative Pronouns and Relative Clauses
Modals
The Passive
Conditional Clauses (zero, first, second and third)
Direct and Indirect Speech
Subject-specific English lessons will be based on material provided by the Professor, and made available through Google Classroom Didactic methods
- The course will be divided in two parts: 30 hours of grammar at B1 level which will be recorded as video-lessons and made available via Google Classroom; 18 classroom hours focusing on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) delivered by the professor.
Learning assessment procedures
- The final exam is internet-based and consists of 15 grammar questions and 16 ESP questions (Medical Biotechnology).
Each correct answer is worth one point, wrong answers and blanks are worth 0 points.
Pass equals 60% correct answers (final mark is 18/30). Reference texts
