Training objectives
- Knowing the role of the physiotherapist in the neurological rehabilitation team. Knowing the specific assessment instruments of the physiotherapist (also with reference to ICF CORE SETS if any) structures and functions (with particular attention to those sensitive and sensory, neuromuscular and control of voluntary and involuntary movements and gait pattern), and activities participation (with a focus on walking, care of people, and use of the hand and upper limb) contextual factors, the use of valid and reliable assessment tools and clinical observation.
Formulate the physiotherapy functional diagnosis; identify the functional prognosis also in relation to the gradient of modifiability of the problems.
Formulate (through clinical reasoning) goals to be achieved.
Define the physiotherapy‘s treatment plan in relation to the goals by identifying intensity, frequency, duration, facilitations, contraindications and rules for the stop.
Identify aids and orthotics useful to the achievement of patient autonomy.
Identify the specific role of the physical therapist in neurological rehabilitation team.
Knowing the motor learning mechanisms.
Knowing the essential principles of the main approaches of physiotherapy (eg. Bobath, Cognitive, Therapeutic exercise, constraint induced therapy movement).
Acquire the basic concepts of the enabling approach and the methods of rehabilitative intervention to the main disabilities secondary to neurological pathology: the rules for appropriate taking charge of people with results of disabling neurological damage.
Acquire the rationale for an accurate evaluation of the people to be taken in charge and know the main measuring instruments related to impairments, the limitations of the activities and the restrictions of the participation of disabled subjects.
Formulate a team for the rehabilitation project according to the ICF model, also regarding the guidelines for stroke, spinal cord injury, TBI, MS.
Understanding the pathophysiology and clinical features of the major neurological disorders (defined according to epidemiological data) with a focus on brain injury, spinal cord injury to, the disorders and diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system of traumatic, inflammatory, vascular and degenerative.
Know the clinical and neuroimaging of the priority health problems in the nervous system and peripheral of various origin, likely to neurosurgical treatment.
Acquire the basic concepts of the enabling approach and the methods of rehabilitative intervention to the main disabilities secondary to neurological pathology: the rules for appropriate taking charge of people with results of disabling neurological damage.

PHYSIOTHERAPY AND NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS
-Role of the physiotherapist in rehabilitation of the neurological patient.
-Evaluation: ICF CORE SETS ( if present) structure/function, activity/participation and specific contextual factors for Stroke , head trauma and MS patients and motor neuron disorders.
Transversal evaluation tools (e.g. 6'WT) and those specific for various other disorders ( e.g. ASIA).
-principles of clinical reasoning for functional diagnosis in physiotherapy and the setting ogf goals in neurological setting.
-principles and rationale of therapeutic exercise in neurological setting.
-core principles of main approaches in physiotherapy (e.g. Bobath, cognitive therapeutic exercise, CIMT).

Mechanisms of functional recovery after brain damage and rehabilitative interventions to promote neuroplasticity (i.e. robotics, virtual reality, noninvasive brain stimulation, CIMT). Rehabilitation principles, prognostic factors and rehabilitation clinical pathways for stroke, spinal cord injury, severe brain injury and multiple sclerosis patients. Every course section will consider interdisciplinary team work, the ICF classification (WHO 2001) and the more recent international clinical guidelines.

Motion system: voluntary motor skills, anatomical and functional basis of muscle tone and reflexes . Pathology of the voluntary motor system: central paralysis, peripheral paralysis, myopathic paralysis, paralysis disorder of neuromuscular transmission. Movement disorders, cerebellar system, system of somatic sensibility disorders / syndromes sensitive. Coma and impaired consciousness. clinical aspects of the most common neurological disease or at increased social and health impact (ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, miastenia gravis, neuropathies and diseases of the peripheral nervous system, leading myopathies)

- Intracranial hypertension, circulatory disorders of the spinal fluid, brain tumors.
Aneurysms and AVM. Head injuries and vertebral and spinal cord injuries. Degenerative vertebral diseases, vertebral tumors, and radicular damages. Peripheral traumatic injuries and entrapment neuropathies. Neuroimaging, used in neurosurgery, of interest to the physiotherapist.
