Training objectives

Training objectives
APPLIED PHYSICS. Learning of basic scientific knowledge useful for the physiopathology of living systems.
BIOCHEMISTRY. Provide chemistry information that may be useful in understanding the content of subsequent courses. Understanding these concepts will enable the student to frame the chemical and enzymatic processes fundamental for the life of living beings and to understand the teachings of cell biology and physiology.
BIOLOGY. Know the main functions of the cell and the mechanisms related to the conservation, expression and transmission of gene information.
MICROBIOLOGY. The goal is to provide the student with theoretical information on the main microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites), their interaction with the environment and with humans and the methods of transmission and prevention of infections. Some pathogenic microorganisms will also be presented whose transmission, through contact or air, can be prevented through the implementation of appropriate strategies.

Prerequisites

Elements of algebra and trigonometry. Basic knowledge in mathematics. Basic biology knowledge. Knowledge of human anatomy and inorganic, organic and biological chemistry. Basics of cell biology and molecular biology, with reference to synthesis and function of nucleic acids and proteins.
Elements of Cellular Biology.

Course programme

PHYSICS International System; scalar and vector quantities; motion of the point; fundamental and conventional forces; law of impulse; laws of dynamics; work; potential and kinetic energy; systems of material points and center of mass; center of gravity; energy conservation; rigid body balance; dynamics and statics of fluids, introduction to wave phenomena.
BIOCHEMISTRY The table of elements and chemical bonds. Solutions and buffers. Properties of sugars and lipids. Structure and function of proteins. Iron metabolism and function of hemoglobin and myoglobin. ATP, energy metabolism, aerobic glycolysis.
BIOLOGY Biological molecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids. Prokaryotic cells, eukaryotic cells: cell organelles. Biological membranes. Cell cycle, Mitosis and Meiosis. DNA structure and duplication. Transcription and translation.
MICROBIOLOGY Prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms. Viruses: classification, viral structure and hints on viral replication cycles and pathogenesis. Microbial growth: notes on physical and chemical methods, sterilization, antimicrobial agents and development of drug resistance. Examples of microbial diseases transmitted from person to person by air and by direct contact.

Didactic methods

Lectures, including slides that will be made available on the course minisite.

Learning assessment procedures

PHYSICS
Written exam: 10 multiple choice questions (each with 5 responses). Rating: 3 for points correct answer, 0 points for wrong answer or question not answered. The correct answer is validated only if the student submits the proof. Time allotted 45 min. To pass this test it is required to get at least 18 points out of 30.
BIOCHEMISTRY
Written exam: 30 multiple choice questions. Evaluation: 1 point for correct answer, 0 points for wrong or not given answer. Time: 40 min.
APPLIED BIOLOGY
The test includes a written test consisting of 31 questions, some of which provide a closed answer and some questions are open-ended. For each correct answer 1 point and no points for answers not given or incorrect. Verification with 31 positive responses on / 31 total, provides a score of 30/30 and laud. The written test lasts 45 minutes.
MICROBIOLOGY
The exam will be oral or written in the form of multiple choice questions (31 multiple choice questions with 5 answers each of which one correct; time available 15-20 minutes). Evaluation: 1 point for correct answer, 0 points for wrong answer or not given. To pass the test it is necessary to acquire at least 18 points out of 30. The test with 31 positive answers out of 31 total requires a score of 30/30 and honors. The oral or written exams will be conducted online or in presence according to the University's indications and guidelines. The final grade is a weighted average of the marks obtained.
