EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE
On completion of the course the student is expected to:
-know the architecture of quantitative clinical research and the principles of qualitative research in physiotherapy and rehabilitation .
- know the types of useful sources for the EBP in physiotherapy
Skills:
-formulate a clinical questionnaire (PICO)
-search for relevant literature on the main online databanks regarding physiotherapy.
-carry out critical evaluation (internal validity) of a clinical study or systematic review.
-evaluate the external validity of a study and integrate expertise, patient values and available resources in order to in the decision-making process (EPB 5 steps)
-interpret goals, methods, usefulness of of qualitative research in physiotherapy and rehabilitation
-integrate results of research in physiotherapy as part of a holistic approach in accordance with ICF framework

EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE
-Structure and aims of quantitative clinical research: experimental studies (RCT,NRCT, NCT) and observational studies (transversal, prospective, retrospective) and their results.
-Elements for assessing the risk of bias in trials, primary diagnostic studies and systematic reviews
- Statistical and clinical significance. Dichotomous and continuous outcomes (reporting methods). Definition and interpretation of the confidence interval), MCID (minimally important clinical difference) MDC (minimal detectable change) in the EBP process.
- Diagnostic accuracy indices (sensitivity, specificity, LR + and LR +, VPP and VPN), Fagan nomogram and their use in the EBP process.
- Objectives, structure and interpretation of systematic reviews and meta-analyzes. Introduction to the GRADE method
- Aims of qualitative and mixed methods research in rehabilitation
-Guidelines for study reporting

-basic concepts and definition of DB rationale and relative application. Definition of relations between data and integrity. Making Reports. Data transfer to electronic spread sheets.
-management of descriptive statistics and relative application to data through e-spreadsheets. Management of variables. Definition of frequency and calculation of distribution frequency for qualitative and quantitative data by means of Microsoft Excel. Graphic representation of steam-leaf data and distribution. Measurement of central, position and dispersion trends for qualitative data.
-function of statistical analyses in Microsoft Excel and their application to data. Relations between indices.
-analysis procedure of statistical, descriptive data-histograms/ in Microsoft Excel.
-practical exercises on the computer.

Learning assessment procedures

EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE: Students will receive three studies 15 days before the exam (1 clinical trial, 1 study of diagnostic accuracy, 1 systematic review ). Students have to understand and critically evaluate them (using appropriate tools). Written exam with short open questions: interpretation of an abstract (max 5 points) , at least 8 questions that test the correct understanding of the methods and results of the three studies, and at least 5 questions that test knowledge/skills (included in the learning objectives ) but not included in the above questions. Each question can receive a maximum of 1 to 3 points (depending on the complexity of the question); the score is assigned depending on the completeness and correctness of the answer. Maximum obtainable score= 33 ; from 31 onwards a praised is attributed. A test of online literature search in PubMed , PEDro, and the Cochrane Library that can confirm the mark, or increase or decrease it up to 2 points .

IT APPLIED TO EBP AND PHYSIOTHERAPY RESEARCH The student have to develop a dataset (in Microsoft Excel 2010) prepared with data from a survey: for a correct interpretation of the values, the students are given the questionnaire used for the survey and its coding plan. He asked the student to answer specific questions regarding the calculation of descriptive indicators (absolute frequencies, percentages, frequencies, indicators of centrality and variability) which provide for the creation of charts and graphs in Microsoft Excel format 2010. The students have to produces 4 tables and 3 graphs. For each table made the student receives max. 4 points (3 for the result and one for editing). For each graph made the student receives max 4 points for 1 specific graphic (3 for the result and one for editing) and max 5 points for the other two graphs (4 for the result and one for editing) based on complexity proposed operation.

STATISTICS APPLIED TO PHYSIOTHERAPY RESEARCH: written exam consisting in 28 questions multiple choice. The evaluation of the test consider only t the questions that were answered correctly at least 3 students (waste questions). For correction the following formula is used:
Rating = 30 - (total number of questions - number of waste questions - 1) + correct answers.

The final grade results from the weighted average of the three partial ratings.
