Training objectives

For the first period of the clinical training attendance, student performance is only observation. The student learns to observe the activity in the clinics as a whole, aimed in particular to patient reception procedures, to the preparation of dental and medical records and radiographic documentation, to the preparation of the meeting and the necessary medical intervention instrumentation, to operator assistance, to fill in the dental and medical records and compilation of administrative data, to the decontamination and disinfection of the operating area, the contaminated instruments sterilization and the stocking and reordering of sterilized instruments.

Course programme

1. The student learns about the techniques of motivation and their effectiveness, and to use the methods and tools of plaque detection in relation to the dental-gingival diseases. Oral and extra-oral objectivity: health history, gum tissues, hard tissues; diagnostic indices; photographic documentation, radiographic; Recording of data on periodontal health.
2. The student acquires knowledge for the use of materials and tools for home and professional oral hygiene functional to the prevention of caries and periodontal disease. He/she learns to know and use the home and professional principals for control of bacterial plaque: General, function, classification, components, indications and contraindications of materials and tools for oral hygiene, materials and instruments for professional oral hygiene.
3.The student learns how to motivate and instruct the patient to the control and removal of the oral bacterial plaque in order to prevent, reduce and control the oro-dental disease in different clinical pictures: Motivation and education of the patient: communication techniques; concept of primary, secondary, tertiary prevention; Control of diet and eating habits; Control of bad habits.

Learning assessment procedures

FORMATIVE EVALUATION is ensured by the tutorial system during training experiences; in particular by the Tutor / guide who accompanied the student and looks at the performance. It occurs in three distinct phases of the AA (December, March and July). It is centered on the core issues. At present the experiences of Job are quantified in the number of 2 for the first year of the course and the evaluation forms are made available to students on the Web site. The methodology is the structured clinical examination and objective (Objective Structured Clinical Examination- OSCE) which consists of 2 parts: the first contains a list of skills, behaviors, expected results, while the second documents the level achieved for each competence through a measuring scale (grading with verbal multidimensional descriptors). The Tutor / guide documents for the most important skills the level reached by the student, avoiding to measure it with a vote.
SUMMATIVE OR CERTIFICATIVE EVALUATION AT THE END OF YEAR is the synthesis of information obtained from the two annual assessments. The final score is computed on a score in tenths attributed to two tests, also integrated with data on students from various sources (evolution in the skills documented in the internship profiles, quality of any report, projects, individual works, participation in other initiatives). The examination is run by a committee chaired by the Director of Vocational Education with a professional Tutor representation, in some cases it is also considered the presence of other teachers.
