Training objectives
- The main aim of the course is to provide students with elements of genome epidemiology, bioinformatics and practical capacity of developing and managing disease registries and of analyzing genomic databases.
Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of human genetics, and medical and statistical computing.
Course programme
- Anatomy of the human genome, elements of epidemiology and population genetics.
Linkage and association studies, genome-wide studies
Epistasis, ecogeneticas and pharmacogenetics
Analysis of clinical and genomic organization and in electronic databases.
Development and management of relational databases
The DBMS (Data Base Management System)
Database implementation
Database handling and querying
Data displaying using forms and reports
Elements of Access Basic language and macros development
Applications of genome epidemiology in public health services Didactic methods
- Lectures with slide shows. “Dynamic” lectures with continuous involvement of the students.
Practical exercises in computer classroom, consisting in the development and handling of clinical and genomic database, linkage and association genetic tests, organization and management of relational databases, database querying and generation of result reports. Learning assessment procedures
- Oral exam with 4 questions on the topics covered in the course and lasting around 15 minutes. The exam is designed to assess student’s mastery of the course topics and understand their translational applications, as well as to estimate the practical ability to organize database, to perform analyses, to solve problems and to present the results.
