Credits for graduate courses UniMaastricht and UniFerrara

The system of crediting single exams is different between both universities, which may be confounding/disturbing when students participate in the exchange between the two universities (FAME) and need the respective credits for their curriculum.

Maastricht: crediting is linear from 0 to 10, with either 5.5 or 6.0 being accepted as lowest ‘pass’.  From 5.5 to 7.9 the vote is ‘passed’, and from 8.0 to 10.0 ‘good’.

Ferrara: the scale is semi-linear from 0 to 30, with 18 as the lowest ‘cut-off’ for accepted,  with the subjective estimation of the students/teachers that e.g. ‘23’ is a low (and sometimes not accepted!) figure and that students have to be very eager to be placed in the range of ’28 to 30’ in view of their future career possibilities.

To avoid a continuous diplomatic difficulty in this respect, participants in the Ferrara/Maastricht Exchange FAME would like to suggest the Ferrara/Maastricht Schools of Medicine the following scales, very much aware of the fact, that single students/teachers might have deviating opinions (suggestions for modifications therefore very welcome!).

However, as Italian students studying in Maastricht and/or in PBL courses in Ferrara do an extra effort in time and energy and will have acquired new techniques of learning and teaching – possibly very useful for their further medical and personal development -, 2 extra points are added to the below given translated scores:

Example: a student receives in Maastricht the vote ‘7’; this will be translated to ‘28’ in Ferrara (26 + 2).
